The Science of QR Code Color Contrast & Dark Mode Scanning

While black-and-white QR codes are traditional, modern branding often calls for custom colors and gradients. However, violating optical contrast rules is the #1 reason custom QR codes fail.

The Luminance Rule

Optical scanners do not see color—they convert the image to grayscale and measure luminance differences. Your foreground modules must be significantly darker than the background canvas.

Dangerous Color Combinations to Avoid

• Yellow or Light Gray on White Background (Fails 95% of scans).
• Dark Red or Navy on Jet Black Background (Fails 100% of scans).
• Inverted / Negative Codes (White modules on Black background fail on older Android sensors).
