1D Barcodes vs. 2D QR Codes: Differences, Storage & Use Cases
While 1D barcodes and 2D QR codes both encode optical data, their capabilities and applications are vastly different.
1D Linear Barcodes (UPC / EAN / Code 128)
- Encodes data in 1 dimension (horizontal bar widths only).
- Capacity: 20–25 alphanumeric characters.
- Requires specialized laser or linear CCD scanners.
- No built-in error correction.
2D QR Codes (Matrix Codes)
- Encodes data in 2 dimensions (horizontal and vertical modules).
- Capacity: Up to 7,089 numeric or 4,296 alphanumeric characters.
- Scanned by any standard smartphone camera in 360 degrees.
- Built-in Reed-Solomon error correction restores up to 30% damaged data.
